Short note: The main location has been closed since January 2020 due to extensive renovation and can only be admired from the outside. The Interim is located at Kunstgasse 1.

Here you can see the route to the new location. Alternatively, you can follow the path from the Lindenau Museum to the Interim in the following video:

Everyone likes to collect, right? Some prefer postage stamps, others holiday memories. 🖈Bernhard August von Lindenau was one of the latter. When traveling around Europe, he collected all the art he could find. In 1848 he opened an art school and built the museum shortly after, in order to be able to appreciate and share his finds back at home.

After Lindenau's death, a nicer, larger museum was built at the foot of the castle hill in 1874, which after its opening in 1876 offered enough space for all the valuable art treasures. Today you can admire local and international, historical and contemporary art there, but the building itself is also worth a visit.

The 180 early Italian panel paintings from the Renaissance period and the collection of antique ceramics and plaster casts are particularly worth seeing. Both are unique in this form and can only be found here in the Lindenau-Museum, for which the museum is known worldwide.

In an interview, Roland Krischke, Director of the Lindenau Museum, talks about the past, present and future of the Lindenau Museum. He also reveals which is his very personal favorite piece in the exhibition.

Museum collections:

  • Special collection of early Italian panel paintings
  • Ancient ceramics
  • Plaster casts
  • Art library
  • Classical modern art and contemporary art
  • Graphic collection with an extensive collection of illustrated portfolios of late expressionism and the new objectivity
  • The world's largest collection of works by Gerhard Altenbourg and Conrad Felixmüller

The museum is also an art school.

Unfortunately, the exhibitions in the Lindenau Museum are currently not accessible. At almost 150 years old, the museum building has already achieved a lot, so it deserves 🖈a little freshening up. In the meantime, the museum has found an alternative location in Kunstgasse 1. There you can visit a small permanent exhibition as well as the depot with plaster casts of ancient masterpieces. The studio's course rooms have also found a new place there. And when the actual museum building is renovated, you definitely have to visit the beautiful city of Altenburg again. 🙂

In the following video, the interim of the Lindenau-Museum at Kunstgasse 1 is presented by press spokesman Steven Ritter. This is part of the video series "art for couch potatoes" by the employees of the Lindenau-Museum, in which they present various exhibitions and art objects.

Due to the large variety of art objects of the most diverse genres, there is sure to be something for everyone, including you. And when you've had enough of the art, you can also take part in one of the many events or the activities offered by the Studio Bildende Kunst. – the art school of the Lindenau-Museum. Here you can find offers in the field of art education.
