Theaterplatz 19

Routenbeschreibung anzeigen

Short Note: The main location has been closed since January 2020 due to extensive renovation and can only be admired from the outside. Performances are currently taking place in the Altenburg theater tent.

Here you can see the route to the new location. Alternatively, you can follow the path from the theater to the theater tent in the following video:

This big building is pretty impressive, don't you think? In 1871 the builders went to great lengths to build a representative theatre. The style is neo-renaissance – you probably saw it right away. 🙂

By the way, the architect Otto Brückwald was a real specialist in theater buildings. When building the Altenburg theater, he orientated himself on the Semperoper in Dresden. Can you see the similarities? After his commission from Altenburg, he planned the festival theater in Bayreuth.

In 1871 the house was inaugurated as the “Ducal Court Theatre”. As the “Landestheater” it has retained its fame far beyond Altenburg to this day. Since 1995 it has been united with the stages of the city of Gera in the joint enterprise “Theater Altenburg Gera”.

The speciality of the Altenburger Theatre is that it is a multi-genre venue. Do you feel more like classical theatre or a symphony concert today? Would you like to go to an opera or maybe see a ballet? No problem, because everything your heart desires is offered here.

And with success, because the theatre can proudly announce that it attracts the largest number of spectators in Thuringia every year. That sounds like it is really worth watching a piece there. Maybe you can find something in the theatre schedule that interests you?

At the proud age of 150 years old, the theatre building has deserved a little care and affection - it has been in renovation since 2019. Therefore, no performances can currently take place in the building. But as the word is: “The Show must go on!”. That is why you will find an interim venue in the form of a large theatre tent on the large festival meadow for the time of the renovation work. There you can still let the actors and actresses take you into other worlds.

In their series "What kind of theatre?" Employees of the Altenburg Gera Theatre present various aspects of everyday theatre life. These can be found on the YouTube channel of Theatre Altenburg Gera.

You can find offers for theatre and music education here.

In an interview, Kai Kunze, General Manager of the Altenburg Gera Theater, presents the diverse range of theaters on offer. He also explains which building work is currently being carried out in the theater.
