You enter the area at the Great Pond, a wonderful inner-city leisure and recreation area. You have probably already discovered the Great Pond. Here you will find a spacious park, a wonderful avenue of old chestnuts around the water surface and on the island in the middle of the pond one of the most beautiful zoos in Thuringia : the Inselzoo.
Many leisure activities are available here: you can get a lot of fresh air while walking, visit the swimming pool or row on the pond in summer. A modern playground with a wide range of sports and play equipment has just been inaugurated on the small festival area behind the swimming pool.
In an interview, Lord Mayor André Neumann explains why the area around the Great Pond is one of his favorite places in Altenburg.
If you are in town with the mobile home, you can use the mobile home parking space. It has all the media, offers a toilet and shower and is surrounded by greenery. Incidentally, the outdoor pool (“Südbad”) and the Altenburg Gera theatre in the tent on the large fairground are not far away.
And in the immediate vicinity you will find restaurants and hotels, for example the Restaurant Da Angelo or the Parkhotel Altenburg – stop by and relax when the sun is reflected in the water, the leaves of the large trees rustle mysteriously and the swans rise majestically and slide along the water.
The terrain of the area points back far into the city's past. The pond was created in the Middle Ages. It served as a water reservoir and for fish farming. It was not until the end of the 16th century that the front part of the pond was separated by a dam. In 1720/21 the island was laid out in the middle of the pond to maintain the ducal court. In 1809 an inn was built. In 1907 the city acquired the area. The southwest park was built after the Second World War. And in 1954 the island zoo was opened.
The pond now has a water surface of around 10 hectares and, together with the adjacent city forest and the bright meadow, also forms an ecological gem. By the way: The Capitol Film Theatre is also located on the Great Pond.
